Synopsis (taken from front flap)
Errol Le Cain, a highly gifted yong artist, has taken King Arthur's sword Excalibur as the subject of his first picture book. The story, which is suggested by the Arthurian Legends but does not attempt to follow them closely, tells how Arthur received a magic sword from the Lady of the Lake, and how his wicked sister Morgana le Fay tried to use it against him. The illustrations are certainly among the most remarkable to appear in a children's book in recent years. The delicately romantic quality of some of the scenes, the startling dramatic impact of others and the abundance of finely wrought detail create a fairy-tale world of extraordinary charm.
